My last 3 years at Appirio have presented me with many career and growth opportunities. Let’s just say the path to get me where I am today has been nothing short of winding. I started in accounting, then moved to implementing Concur; after that I implemented Medallia, and now I am a Customer Engineering Manager for Salesforce at Appirio. My story is unique, but the fact that I was given every chance to be successful with Appirio is not.
I had been working in accounting for a Fortune 500 company and noticed a former coworker’s post on social media. He had recently started with Appirio and shot a picture of his afternoon work-beer. Until that point I thought work-beers were the things of fairy tales, so I decided it was worth my time to apply for a job, any job, with Appirio. That job came in the form of a position within the accounting department.
My time in Appirio’s accounting department gave me an understanding of how the company worked. The position also gave me a chance to work with a lot of different people in various roles within the company. While I quickly knew I loved Appirio and wanted to build a career here, it was also becoming clear I did not want that career to be in accounting.
I started asking what people liked and disliked about what they did. Since I had literally no consulting experience, I knew I needed to find a technology that aligned with my skills and experience. Once I knew the what, I just needed to figure out the how. I set a meeting with a member of the consulting management team and talked through next steps.
From that first meeting to today, no 2 days have been the same. I have never worked harder and have never been more challenged. There’s a figure of speech that goes: “If you are ever the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.” I have yet to find a room at Appirio where I am in the top 10, and that is what keeps me working and striving to be better. I have had a lot of jobs in my life, but never had a career until I joined Appirio, and I am thankful for the opportunity every day. Oh, and the work-beers don’t stink either.
