fun at work

Creating one of the best places to work takes a lot of creativity and a small dose of arcade fun. When we first started having some fun team activities at the Appirio Jaipur office, we thought they would be filled with people. After talking to a few people, I realized that straying from your desk to engage in fun activities isn’t a natural tendency for most people at work.

The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with a range of strategies to help you incorporate fun into work life. It must be remembered that there is no “one best way” to have fun, as every organization (and every individual within that organization) will have a different idea of what fun is.

Happy employees = happy customers = better bottom line

Happy and inspired employees are the ones most likely to be innovative and effective. Much of that begins with making work an enjoyable place to be. It must be said that I am not advocating that the workplace be turned into a sports arena. There is a time for play and a time to work hard. We need to get the balance right, and ensure that we build in some time for fun that does not distract from core business. Many of these fun activities should be designed to enhance team-building and trust.

Personalize your workspace to create your own home away from home

Something as simple as getting your workspace to reflect your personality can help you feel more engaged and at ease at work. Display pictures and posters you like at your desk, listen to music (if you’re able to)… even a personalized screensaver can do the trick.

The benefits of incorporating fun into your organization

Making fun an important part of your Worker Experience will help you do the following:

  • Develop a positive, unique company culture
  • Enhance employee satisfaction and loyalty
  • Boost morale and increase motivation
  • Build relationships between employees, managers and their direct reports, and employees and your customers
  • Improve teamwork
  • Attract and retain the best people (reducing recruitment and training costs)
  • Improve customer satisfaction (engaged workers make for happier customers)
  • Enhance creativity and problem-solving across your workforce
  • Make conflict resolution simpler and difficult issues easier to work through

A more open, engaged workforce leads directly to a boost in productivity and better performance. Think about the things you do every day at work and try to make room for some laughter and team-building fun in the workplace.
