Appirio Employees Make a Global Impact on Future of the Cloud Day

Every year, Appirio sponsors a company-wide day of service called Future of the Cloud Day, where employees can focus on participating in volunteering events to benefit our local communities. This year, we had our biggest Future of the Cloud Day ever — with 71% of employees (848 Appirians, to be exact!) participating in an event.

Because Appirio has  employees all over the world, it’s always been a challenge to engage those who work remotely  and are unable to travel to a regional event. This led us to try virtual events for the first time at this year’s day of service, allowing Appirians to participate in a charitable project from anywhere around the globe.

Activities included walking and running for charity donations, playing online trivia games to earn grains of rice for the World Food Programme, making superhero capes and cards for hospitalized children, and weaving paracord bracelets for first responders.

But doing a virtual event didn’t mean our employees were going it alone — each employee doing a virtual event joined a hangout to get to know other employees while they completed their activity. In all, more than 170 employees gave our virtual events a try.

This year, we were also able to engage the Appirio crowdsourcing community by running a pro-bono development challenge for Code2040, a local San Francisco nonprofit that supports underrepresented minorities by creating pathways to educational, professional, and entrepreneurial success in technology. Our community was able to move Code2040’s internship matching program to the cloud so that Code2040 staff is no longer required to match up interns with potential internships manually — a labor-intensive process that was keeping the organization from expanding to other locations.

Of course, the greatest amount of participation we get on Future of the Cloud Day is for in-person regional events. Nearly 700 employees volunteered at a variety of organizations including Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte, NC; Arts and Scraps Warehouse in Detroit, MI; Indiana Sports Corp in Indianapolis, IN; Clean Pathshala in Jaipur, India; and the Trussel Trust Foodbank in London.

Spending the day meeting other Appirians while engaging in community service projects makes Future of the Cloud Day the most rewarding day of my year. I’m already looking forward to 2016!
