Appirio was founded on 3 core values: Customers, Team, and Fun. We take these values seriously and they are reinforced day in and day out in everything that we do. However, there is another value that is unspoken yet ingrained in the culture — philanthropy.
Philanthropy (from Greek φιλανθρωπία etymologically) means “love of humanity” in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing, and enhancing “what it is to be human” on both the part of the benefactors (by identifying and exercising their values in giving and volunteering) and the beneficiaries (by benefiting).
We are often the benefactors — the ones giving our time and talents for social good. We organize much of this through our Silver Lining program, which supports pro-bono services, company-wide volunteer days, and provides every employee with paid time off in order to volunteer.
However, sometimes that spirit of philanthropy turns inward and our own teammates become the beneficiaries. Earlier this month, one of our consultants lost their home and most of their personal belongings in a fire. No one was harmed, but they suffered a very serious personal and financial loss. The very next day, Appirians went to work setting up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money and help our teammate. Within 5 days, our employees had raised more than $30,000. Some gave big, some a few dollars — some anonymously. We have a donation system that allows Appirians to donate their Company Store points (points that Appirians receive for recognition of their hard work). Many gave that way. The response didn’t just come from the employee’s direct team. It came from employees around the world — many of whom had never met this person. They simply cared.
We saw a similar response earlier in the year when an Appirian reached out to Silver Lining to see how we could support the Nepal relief efforts. In less than a week, Appirians donated almost $15,000 to the cause.
As the lead for our Silver Lining efforts, I get the opportunity to see the power of “we” in action. In 2015 alone, Appirians donated over 6,000 volunteer hours, including Volunteer Time Off and Future of the Cloud Day. Future of the Cloud Day is our annual company-wide day of service. This year, Appirians who volunteered around the globe donated over 3,500 hours in just a single day. Since the program’s inception, Appirio has contributed over 20,000 hours of community and pro-bono services and has given over $475,000 in cash and product donations to charitable causes.
Some of those causes include:
- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk, which raises money to find cures and ensure access to the best available treatments for all blood cancer patients. Many Appirians will be participating in Light the Night walks across the U.S. this Fall.
- Working in partnership with Salesforce.com on their VetForce initiative — which helps nearly 10,000 veterans gain Salesforce training, certification and related employment — and to support Perkins School for the Blind, a Massachusetts-based organization with a mission to prepare children and young adults who are blind with the education, tools, and skills they need to realize their potential.
People join a company to make a difference. Frankly, it’s one of the main reasons I joined Appirio. When I look at the impact we have both as individuals and as a collective team, I am so proud of what we accomplish.
