Big Thinking at the Worker Experience Tour in Atlanta

Small details placed throughout the W Atlanta – Buckhead’s top floor bar ensured that attendees of the Worker Experience Tour felt appreciated. From the welcoming floor mats to custom-made Citruous Cycle drink (think Virtuous Cycle, only with alcohol), Appirio set out to create a welcoming environment for their guests — but they didn’t stop at swizzle sticks and wireless chargers.

Because it was the first stop on Appirio’s Worker Experience (WX) Tour, it was important for them to communicate that worker satisfaction is integral to a company’s success. It’s clear that today’s workers want to feel part of a team — not be the one who is solely responsible for all the work — and the WX Tour is helping companies understand that correctly addressing worker’s needs can mean growth and profit. In other words, a successfully implemented WX will drive change, encouraging connection and engagement for employees, while boosting a healthier business with satisfied and loyal customers.

“Robots are kinda cool nowadays.” – Harry West

The Tour kicked off quickly with Appirio’s very own Head of Worker Solutions, Harry West being the first to speak. West spoke about how automation is taking over commerce. In fact, last year, McKinsey revealed that automated technology can replace up to 45 percent of workers today. West stated there are two possible responses to workplace automation: 1) the Bashful approach — Cower and hide from robotic automation and all change, or 2) the Bold approach — Embrace automation so it works for you. Talk to other parts of the business, build for a future WX, and plan for specific business outcomes.

The Bold approach builds a healthy WX, which then fuels a loyal customer experience — creating a never-ending Virtuous Cycle and providing profit and growth for the organization. Choosing to boldly step into a positive WX can determine the success of the business.

Shared tools help build WX

An organization can build trust and connection by recognizing their employees’ hard work on a public forum. Latane Conant, Appirio’s Chief Marketing Officer, revealed a simple way to recognize employees’ hard work — by using tools like Amazon’s Alexa to post a shout out to Salesforce Chatter for an employee’s job well done. With one verbal command, Conant showed an easy way to multitask, while still recognizing and rewarding employees.

Using collaborative tools (like Chatter) in the workplace can increase productivity and transform a culture, but only in organizations that value transparency. For it to be successful, people need to be empowered and willing to share with the rest of the organization. Guest speaker Cheryl Cran explained that “radical creativity means we have to have the tools to share what we’re innovating and creating. Tools like Chatter, like Google — these tools help us leverage that real-time creativity and engagement. The future of work is about shared leadership.”

Taking the lead from the leaders

Learning from industry leaders was an important part of the day at WXT Atlanta. Through fireside chats with key figures at UPS, Unum, and The First Tee, we discovered how businesses can transform on a massive scale. With worker and customer journeys that are thoughtfully mapped out, and the right technology put in place, organizations can create a versatile workforce through unlimited access, continuous learning, and collaboration.
