As the expectation for automation rises and the tolerance for technical waste vanishes, smart CIOs spend their money on the tools and practices that help their IT teams move and change fast. This year, CIOs are projected to invest $3.8B in DevOps, with growth rate expected around at least 18 percent per year over the next five years. Just like with the move to Agile and Cloud, businesses worldwide are realizing that DevOps provides the tools and methods that will help them stay competitive. Appirio’s Senior Manager of Consulting Services, Andrew Davis, spoke about this DevOps evolution, saying, “All modern organizations depend on IT. Organizations that invest in the infrastructure and processes experience substantially more growth and opportunities to innovate.”
What is DevOps?
With all the buzz about DevOps, we should get this part straight right away — DevOps is not a single product, tool, team, or job title. DevOps is a combination of tools, practices, and fundamental values that allow Developers (Dev) and IT Operations (Ops = Release managers, System Admins, Security, etc) to work together to get smaller chunks of higher quality code released faster, and with less human intervention. On top of that, DevOps is a cultural mindshift — team members are actively accountable for the speed, efficiency, and quality of the product throughout the entire development lifecycle — versus just “their part” of the process.
It's important to understand this most basic definition early, as one of the most common and significant barriers organizations encounter is the lack of definition and simplification around their future DevOps state. The resulting delay exacerbates current challenges with inverse spending, losing good technical talent and can even contribute to market share loss.
The concept of a company’s “digital cred” is not just customer reputation metric, good developers look for this too, and they have options. Organizations that figure this out early see the tangible benefits of a high performing DevOps team — 22 percent less time on rework, 44 percent more time on new feature development, deployment frequencies increased by 200 percent, and higher employee Net Promoter Scores.
The DevOps promised land
Imagine establishing a development environment where a faster pace of innovation and adaptation also leads to higher internal employee satisfaction, where going from two to three releases a year scaled rapidly to 40 releases resulted in higher quality and where competitive advantage and compliance could be equally driven and accounted for across all development team members. Imagine all of this being collaborative and continuously improved upon.
To help our customers remove barriers and achieve these real, tangible results, Appirio is again rising to the occasion and providing a DevOps solution — we call it AppirioDX. We have a history of removing barriers to innovation. We run our business in the cloud, leading our customers in adopting cloud technologies that help their businesses run with Salesforce, Google, and Workday. We run with agility, driving customer projects with our Agile methodology, The Appirio Way. Now, we run our development teams with AppirioDX. For Salesforce customers, this solution is an impactful complement to a Salesforce DX transition or legacy Salesforce development. With the use of open source and flexible tools, easy set up, and synchronize, we take much of the pain and confusion around establishing DevOps tools and processes — so we can focus on guiding you through the cultural adjustments and ownership mindshift that will make your DevOps transformation stick.
