"Making a Life while Making a Living" with Maynard Webb & Jason Averbook

February 13, 2013
The promise of every new technology is that it will usher in new levels of efficiency at work, reducing our daily burdens and allowing us to spend more time with our families and pursue our personal passions. Cloud, mobile, and social technologies offer anytime, anywhere access to work, forever changing our relationship with our employer. HR and IT must work together to ensure deployed strategy and technology is used to engage and inspire the workforce, not burn them out and exhaust great talent. -The Cloud delivers anytime, anywhere access to work (is this good and/or bad for work/life balance?). - IT needs to expand its view to think about the workforce experience (put people on same level as technology - experience is everything in a consumer-driven world). -HR needs to expand its view to understand what is possible with today's technology (employees have better technology at home, so expectations are high with regard to access, service delivery, etc.). People want to work, but they want it to be fulfilling and worth the sacrifices of missing time with their families. Work, as many are experiencing it, isn't providing that. Maynard uses a unique framework that identifies 4 different mindsets around work—the Company Man or Woman, CEO of Your Own Destiny, the Disenchanted Employee, and the Aspiring Entrepreneur. By understanding which of these mindsets best represents your own attitude you'll gain the tools to become more fulfilled in your career.
